Drawing on the Back of an Envelope’ Exhibition at the Linenhall Arts Centre | Call for Submissions
Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
Drawing on the Back of an Envelope is an exhibition devised by visual artist and curator Ian Wieczorek. The expression ‘drawn up on the back of an envelope’ describes the act of pinning down the spark of an idea. The act of drawing is generally seen as a first step in the process of making visual art, and it can also be an end in itself. Artists are invited to make a drawing on the back of an envelope – something inspiring, something playful, something inventive – as part of a celebration of the act of drawing.
The exhibition takes place at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, from Saturday 18th – Saturday 25th May, and is presented in association with the Linenhall’s National Drawing Day programme.
GUIDELINES TO SUBMIT:
1. Use any single envelope up to but NOT LARGER THAN C5 in size (that’s 232 x 163mm).
2. Use any drawing medium.
3. Put your name and contact details (name, tel no, email, address) on the reverse of the side of the envelope you’ve drawn on.
4. Post (you may want to put your submission into another envelope, or not!) or drop in your submission to Linenhall Arts Centre, Linenhall Street, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
5. One submission per person. Closing date for entries is Monday 13th May at 5.00pm. Works will not be for sale. After 23rd May, works may be collected from the Linenhall (NB: no postal returns unless you send an appropriate stamped, self-addressed envelope.)
For further details contact the Linenhall.

Working with Artlink and the staff in the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, I was interested in developing more a sense of community within the hospital and developed a series of “crafty lunches” for staff to be creative in their short lunch break. I quickly identified many participants who were unable to attend because of the working restrictions of their departments or hours so developed the knitting version of the drawing game “consequences”, wherein each participant added something new to a rotating Knitted Thing, culminating in weird objects such as this which were then displayed and where the participants met each other for the first time to admire their shared creations.

The Crip Walk, also known as the C-Walk, is a dance move that originated in the early 1970s by Crip gang members from the South Central Los Angeles area, and has since spread worldwide.[1] The dance is primarily an act of performing quick and intricate footwork.
[hide]
The rivalry between the Crips and the Bloods spilled over into the world of entertainment, with the adoption of the gang dance by various rappers on the West Coast of the United States, who gave it its name, the Crip Walk. This dance involves the movement of one’s feet, classically to the spelling of C-R-I-P (refer C Walk). It was used by Crips at parties to display affiliation, particularly vis-a-vis rival gang the Bloods. It was also used after killing someone to give the kill a Crip signature. MTVdeclined to broadcast any music videos that contained the Crip Walk.[2]
Modern day K-Walk is a dance that derives from the original C-Walk; however, it has no gang affiliation and is generally a lot more complex in terms of execution. What separates the K-Walk from the one originated by the Crips is the absence of hand signs and other gestures symbolizing gang affiliations. It was founded somewhere in 2013, by “Meebo” in the West Coast.
The Clown Walk is a variation of the Crip Walk. The dance is sometimes abbreviated as “C-walk,” causing confusion as to whether people are Crip Walking, Clown Walking or Crown Walking. Clown is based on, and takes many moves from, the original Crip Walk; however, it has no gang affiliation and is generally a lot more complex. Clown Walk moves consist of basic V, Shuffle, Heeltoe, and X-hop. Dancers who utilize this particular form of dance often customize their own moves to make it unique.
The Crown Walk is a variation of the Crip Walk and the Clown Walk. The dance is sometimes abbreviated as “C-walk,” causing confusion as to whether people are Crip Walking, Clown Walking or Crown Walking. Crown Walk moves consist of the same set as Clown Walk.
The Blood Bounce is an alternative dance performed by the Bloods. This variation includes a bent-knee as well as a side to side swagger.
A general misconception is that Clown Walkers or “Clowners” tend to be a lot faster and flashier, whereas Crip and Crown Walkers tend be slower and smoother whilst “beatriding” to music. In reality, modern dance c-walk involves more complex movements as well as good “beatriding” and/or “lyricriding”.
The general difference between Crip Walk,[4] Modern Crip Walk,[5] Clown Walk[6] and Crown Walk[7] are the way moves are executed from elements such as speed, energy, flow, variations, arm control and bounce.

http://vimeo.com/38345122 Dougie From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the dance. For a list of people named Dougie, see Dougie (given name). University student performs the Dougie during a talent show. The Dougie (i/ˈdʌɡiː/ du-gee) is a hip-hop dance generally performed by moving one’s body in a shimmy style and passing a hand through or near the hair on one’s own head.[1] There is no defined way to perform the Dougie, and each individual performs with his or her own variation.[1] Rapper Corey Fowler, nicknamed Smoove, of Cali Swag District said, “Everybody does it different…The way you do it defines you.”[1] History [edit] The dance first originated in Dallas, Texas (America),[2][3] where it took its name from similar moves performed by 1980s rapper Doug E. Fresh.[1][2][4] In 2007, Dallas rapper Lil’ Wil triggered the movement with his hit “My Dougie”.[3] Then, an individual[who?] who attended Texas Southern University returned home to Southern California and taught[why?] the future members of Cali Swag District the dance.[2][5] Cali Swag District recorded the song “Teach Me How to Dougie” and filmed the music video in Inglewood, California during the summer of 2009.[2][4] Subsequently, the video along with the dance went viral on YouTube.[2] External video Cali Swag District teaches you how to Dougie (Dance Lesson) posted on Aug 26, 2010 Montae Ray Talbert, known as “M-Bone” of Cali Swag District, was killed in his car by an unidentified gunman.[4] According to the Cali Swag District spokesman, Greg Miller, “He was the best at doing the dance, and on tour he was always the one in the forefront … He helped bring it to the masses.”[4] At the funeral, mourners did the dance for a tribute video, and Talbert’s grandmother did it as part of her eulogy.[4] According to Cali Swag District: “We are not looking forward to making another dance move. The ‘Dougie’ just picked up organically, we had no idea it would become so popular.”[6] In late 2010 and throughout 2011, the Dougie was performed by a number of athletes and celebrities, including Chris Brown, Henri Lansbury, Reggie Bush,[2] Dez Bryant,[2] DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside,[2] Glen “Big Baby” Davis,[1] Nate Robinson,[2] John Wall,[1][7] Braylon Edwards, Gaël Monfils[1][8] Wolf Blitzer,[4][9] Kate Upton,[10][11][12] and Michelle Obama.[13] In 2012, gymnast Gabby Douglas performed the Dougie upon winning the U.S. Olympic trials [14] and 2012 Summer Olympics U.S. gymnastics team gold and vault silver-medalist McKayla Maroney taught Jenna Hager, daughter of former President of the United States George W. Bush, how to do the Dougie while the gymnastics team was touring London on top of a doubledecker bus.[15] Country artist Blake Shelton poked fun at the urban-developed dance in his 2013 song “Boys ‘Round Here” where he sings “Ain’t a damn one know how to do the dougie…no, not in Kentucky.” The Dougie has evolved into a much more advanced dance. It is included in Jerkin’ and has many moves in itself. Popping is also included into the new Dougie. Notable examples of Dougiers are Marvel Inc’s Johnny Kush, NK$’s Knox Murderz, ShowDown of Marvel Inc and First Lady Michelle Obama.[16] http://vimeo.com/61892667 Finger Eleven Paralyzer music video Parov Stelar – Catgroove (TSC – Forsythe) from Alice https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=W8n6yji9ZOY (Hip Hop dance and school) http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/4CYjE9Gv3A4?version=3&hl=en_GB Its too Darn Hot Dance scene http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/qw0FSREoaLQ?version=3&hl=en_GB (Bob Fosse’s jazzy dancing scene from KISS ME KATE (1953)) http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/jTFu6Q_tHzs?version=3&hl=en_GB India’s Got Talent 3 – 29th July 2011 – Bhangra Vs Hip Hop By Show Stoppers Group – Auditions.mp4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MnXd4vCw5k (CatPeople-Love Battle music video; battle contempoary) http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/N_TaEOc5xAM?version=3&hl=en_GB Alex Gaudino ft. Trees big enough to drive through.
Desiderata – by Max Ehrmann
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Tu Hai Amar Ka Jahaan
Tu Gussa Karti Hai
Bada Accha Lagta Hai
Tu Kaan Pakati Hai
Badi Zor Se Lagta Hai
Mother is more confusing than living itself
You are a world of immortality
When you are angry,
I really like it
When you hold my ear,
It pains a lot

An Grá
by Colm Breathnach
Baile is ea An Grá
go ngabhann tú thairis ar do thuras.
Ar an mám duit
chíonn tú thíos uait é
le hais le loch sáile –
an caidéal glas
ar an gcrosbhóthar taobh thuas dó,
na páirceanna is na garraithe thart air
i mbarróga na bhfallaí cloch dá bhfáisceadh,
oifig an phoist go mbíonn muintir na háite
istigh ann i mbun gnó is ag cadráil,
an dá thigh tábhairne
ar aghaidh a chéile amach beagnach
go mbíonn ceol i gceann acu oíche Shathairn
is sa cheann eile ar an nDomhnach, do ghnáth.
Áit is ea An Grá
ná fuil ar léarscáileanna turasóirí,
go ngabhann tú thairis ar d’aistear
is a fhágann bolaithe na feamainne id pholláirí.

Love
Love is a town
you go by on your journey.
On a mountain pass
you see it below you
by a sea lough—
the green pump
at the crossroads above it
the fields and gardens around it
clasped in the embrace of stone walls,
the post office where the locals
do business and gossip
the two pubs
almost opposite each other
there’s music on Saturday nights in the one
and in the other most Sundays.
Love is a place
that’s not on tourist maps,
a place you go by on your journey
and that leaves the smell of seaweed in your nostrils.

[edit]The loaf
Usually sold in flattened rounds, it is often served toasted with butter along with a cup of tea in the afternoon. The dough is sweeter than sandwich bread, but not as rich as cake, and the sultanas and raisins add flavour and texture to the final product. In Ireland it is sometimes called Bairín Breac, and the term is also used as two words in its more common version. This may either be from the Irish word bairín – a loaf – and breac – speckled (due to the raisins in it), hence it means a speckled loaf (a similar etymology to the Welsh bara brith).
[edit]Halloween tradition
Barmbrack is the centre of an Irish Halloween custom. The Halloween Brack traditionally contained various objects baked into the bread and was used as a sort of fortune-telling game.[2] In the barnbrack were: a pea, a stick, a piece of cloth, a small coin (originally a silver sixpence) and a ring. Each item, when received in the slice, was supposed to carry a meaning to the person concerned: the pea, the person would not marry that year; the stick, would have an unhappy marriage or continually be in disputes; the cloth or rag, would have bad luck or be poor; the coin, would enjoy good fortune or be rich; and the ring, would be wed within the year. Other articles added to the brack include a medallion, usually of the Virgin Mary to symbolise going into the priesthood or to the Nuns, although this tradition is not widely continued in the present day.
Commercially produced barmbracks for the Halloween market still include a toy ring.
[edit]Other references
Barmbracks were mentioned in the Van Morrison song “A Sense of Wonder”:
“ Pastie suppers down at Davey’s chipper
Gravy rings, barmbracks
Wagon Wheels, snowballs.
”
Reference to barmbracks is made in Dubliners by James Joyce. The following example can be found in the first paragraph of Joyce’s short story Clay:
“ The fire was nice and bright and on one of the side-tables were four very big barmbracks. These barmbracks seemed uncut; but if you went closer you would see that they had been cut into long thick even slices and were ready to be handed round at tea. ”

Champ (food)
Photos from my Flickr
Champ
Champ (brúitín in Irish) is an Irish dish,[1] made by combining mashed potatoes and chopped spring onions with butter and milk, and optionally, salt and pepper.[2] It is simple and inexpensive to produce. In some areas the dish is also called “poundies.”
Champ is similar to another Irish dish, colcannon, which uses kale or cabbage in place of scallions.
The word champ has also been adopted into the popular Hiberno-English phrases, to be “as thick as champ”, meaning to be stupid, and to be “as ignorant as champ at a wedding”, meaning to be uncultured or boorish (champ being a common everyday dish, not one befitting a banquet celebration).Bnb’s

AN IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH
Good Luck!!
May there always be work for your hands to do;
May your purse always hold a coin or two;
May the sun always shine on your windowpane;
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;
May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

There’s only one day at a time here, then it’s tonight and then tomorrow will be today again.- Bob Dylan
Chronicles Volume one, Simon and Schuster 2004. P181
Is féidir leis an éirí an bóther leat May the road rise to meet you
Cupán deas tae-Ní féidir é a sháru!
A nice cup of tea-you can’t beat it!
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May life hold you warm in its hand.
Leisure
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree
W. B. Yeats, 1865 – 1939
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made: Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee; And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

“Jabberwocky”
From Alice and the looking glass
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
